Troubleshooting
Start with the log. Everything below is either in the log file or explained by it.
The log file
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Goldstrap\Logs\Goldstrap_<date>_<time>.log, one per run. The exception dialog has a button that opens the latest one, and the tray menu opens the Roblox log instead — those are two different files.
Attach the Goldstrap log when you report a problem. It records the version, the launch arguments, every download and every file it copied, which is usually enough to see where something stopped.
Roblox does not start
Work down this list; each step is cheap and rules out one thing.
- Read the last lines of the log. A failed checksum, a missing executable and a killed process all look different there.
- Force a reinstall — Settings → Channel → Force reinstall. A half-updated client is the most common cause.
- Reset Fast Flags with Settings → Fast Flags → Reset configuration, then launch again. A flag the client no longer accepts can stop it starting.
- Move the mods folder aside by renaming
Modifications. If the client starts, a mod was the problem; restore files in halves to find it. - Launch without Goldstrap through the official Roblox Player once. If that also fails, the problem is the client or the machine, not Goldstrap.
“mfplat.dll is missing” on Windows N
Windows N and KN editions ship without media components, and Roblox needs them. Goldstrap checks for mfplat.dll before launching and shows this message instead of letting the client fail.
Install the Media Feature Pack for your Windows version and restart.
WebView2 prompt
Newer Roblox clients use Edge WebView2 for in-game UI. If the runtime is missing, Goldstrap offers to run the installer that ships inside the Roblox package. Accepting it installs the runtime silently; declining stops the prompt from appearing again.
If the install fails, install WebView2 yourself from Microsoft's Evergreen runtime page and launch again.
Antivirus or SmartScreen blocks it
Goldstrap downloads and starts executables — that is what a bootstrapper does, and heuristics notice. It is also unsigned, so SmartScreen will warn on the first run of a new version.
- Restore the file from quarantine and allow
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Goldstrap. - Check Windows Security → Protection history to see if the client executable was removed rather than blocked.
- If your scanner keeps removing the Roblox client after each launch, force a reinstall once with the folder excluded, then remove the exclusion.
“Goldstrap is already running”
Two copies cannot share one log file, so the second one exits. Look for the tray icon or an open settings window first. If nothing is visible, sign out and back in, or end the stray Goldstrap.exe process in Task Manager.
Settings failed to load
Goldstrap warns, copies the broken file to Settings.json.bak and starts from defaults. To reset deliberately, close Goldstrap and delete Settings.json in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Goldstrap; your mods, themes and profile are separate files and stay.
Downloads keep failing
Each package is verified against the hash in Roblox's manifest, so a truncated or tampered download is discarded and retried up to five times. Persistent failures are almost always the network:
- A proxy or VPN that inspects TLS, or a captive portal.
- An antivirus that scans and locks the downloaded archive mid-write.
- Disk full — the bootstrapper checks free space before starting and needs several gigabytes.
No tray icon, no Discord status
The watcher runs beside the game and needs activity tracking to be on. It also refuses to start if another watcher already holds the lock, which can happen after a crash.
Close Roblox, close Goldstrap from the tray, and launch again. If Discord still shows nothing, check that Discord is running before the game starts.
The window is not blurred
The backdrop is drawn by Windows, not by Goldstrap. If the window looks flat:
- Turn on Transparency effects in Windows Settings → Personalisation → Colours.
- On Windows 10 the effect is Acrylic rather than Mica, and it is subtler by design.
- Remote desktop sessions and some virtual machines disable composition entirely.
Server location shows “Not available”
The lookup needs a public server address. Servers behind a private range, an unreachable geolocation service, or server details being switched off all produce the same message. It is cosmetic; nothing else depends on it.
Reporting a bug
Open an issue on the repository with the Goldstrap log attached, plus what you expected and what happened. Screenshots help when the problem is visual.
